The European Network of Research Ethics Committees (EUREC), Standing Committee of European Doctors (CPME), and Council for International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS) have issued a joint position statement on the European Commission’s proposed Biotech Act.
The organisations welcome the Biotech Act as an important opportunity to strengthen Europe’s clinical research ecosystem, improve clinical trial coordination, and reinforce preparedness for future public health emergencies.
The joint position sets out concrete recommendations and proposed amendments to the Biotech Act, including measures to:
- Strengthen the responsible inclusion of pregnant and lactating women in research
- Support patient and public involvement and engagement
- Reinforce safeguards for data protection and transparency
- Support academic and non-commercial research
- Strengthen Research Ethics Committees (RECs) and European research infrastructure
🤝 As organisations representing RECs, the medical profession, and international ethical guidance for health-related research, EUREC, CPME, and CIOMS urge policymakers to give serious consideration to these recommendations and proposed amendments.
Europe has the opportunity to demonstrate that scientific excellence and high ethical standards go hand in hand.
